Happy Halloween!

I'm starting a new interactive feature on this blog.  Believe it or not, it's actually a little boring talking (writing?) about myself all the time.  (Nobody is more surprised than Bill!) Plus, I'm curious about what you all are doing while I'm on the other side of the world!  I thought it'd be fun for you guys to share some of your happenings with me (and whoever else reads this thing--don't worry, that's only about 50 people and most of them are related to me.)  I've put together a little questionnaire so you can fill me in on Halloween 2011.  Who wants to play?  I think the easiest thing is to use the comment form and cut/paste the questions on there.  Here are the questions.  I'll go first.

1. On a scale of 1-10, (10=best year ever) how was your Halloween this year?

2. Did you (or your kids/grandkids) dress up this year?  What were the costumes?

3.  Did you go trick or treating with the kids or were you the candy-distributor?

4.  What kind of candy did you give out?  How many bags of did you go through?  Or did you blow off the holiday and keep your porch light turned off so the kids wouldn't bug you?

5.  Craziest/most unique costume you saw this Halloween season?

6.  What was your favorite costume as a child?

7.   How do you feel about the over-decorating of houses for Halloween?  Love it
      or hate it?

8.  What's your favorite candy?

9.  Do you/did you/would you ever steal Halloween candy from your children?  (Be Honest--I won't tell!)

10.  Anything else you want to share about Halloween, 2011?  Did you start a new tradition?  First time trick-or-treating with a new baby?  First time your "tween" went out alone?  Spill it!

I can't wait to hear your stories!

(You do realize that if no one answers this I'll feel like a big fat loser....I'm just sayin')

  1. 1. On a scale of 1-10, (10=best year ever) how was your Halloween this year?

I'm going with a solid 7 this year.

    2. Did you (or your kids/grandkids) dress up this year? What were the costumes?

Michael dressed up as a skeleton; Emma was a vampress; Andrew was Anakin Skywalker (from Star Wars) and Mary was Supergirl.

    3. Did you go trick or treating with the kids or were you the candy-distributer?

Both. I took the first shift as candy distributer while Bill went around with the kids. He was supposed to take over the second shift, but I ran out of candy after 45 minutes so then I turned off all the lights and I joined the crew trick or treating.

    4. What kind of candy did you give out? How many bags of did you go through? Or did you blow off the holiday and keep your porch light turned off so the kids wouldn't bug you?

We had a hodge-podge of candy--M & M's, Twixes, Twizzlers, Heath Bars, and Lemon Balls. We went through 6 bags of candy.

    5. Craziest/most unique costume you saw this Halloween season?

I saw this kid who was dressed up as a shark with some legs hanging out of his mouth. Pretty clever, I thought!

    6. What was your favorite costume as a child?

In sixth grade dressed as a bag of laundry. It was actually my friend's costume, and it won me a prize at our school costume contest. Thanks Cristi!

    7. How do you feel about the over-decorating of houses for Halloween? Love it or hate it? I'm not a big fan of over-decorating. We do the scarecrow on the door and the jack-o-lanterns and call it a day.

    8. What's your favorite candy? It's a toss up between Twix and High Fives.

    9. Do you/did you/would you ever steal Halloween candy from your children? (Be Honest--I won't tell!)
    Yes.

    10. Anything else you want to share about Halloween, 2011? Did you start a new tradition? First time trick-or-treating with a new baby? First time your "tween" went out alone? Spill it!

Well, the obvious one...our first Halloween in Okinawa. The base lets the local Japanese kids come on base, so it was a busy night! The neighborhood was packed. Also, even though it made Emma & Andrew very jealous, Michael went trick or treating with his friend (on his own) for the first time.

  2. 1. On a scale of 1-10, (10=best year ever) how was your Halloween this year?

    Mine was average...(1+10)/2 = 5.5
"1" because I was stuck at work; "10" because I found $5 in my desk.

    2. Did you (or your kids/grandkids) dress up this year? What were the costumes?

    I didn't, but my brothers did. I am a proud proud sister - http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/320678_720947982330_2907623_35541786_1032367192_n.jpg

    3. Did you go trick or treating with the kids or were you the candy-distributor?

I casually observed through the large bay window in the comfort of my own living room.

    4. What kind of candy did you give out? How many bags of did you go through? Or did you blow off the holiday and keep your porch light turned off so the kids wouldn't bug you?

We had a grand total of 3 trick-or-treaters, despite the fact that our house was warm and inviting, with a pleasantly-glowing pumpkin on the front step. Consequentially there is a large bowl of Snickers in my kitchen.

    5. Craziest/most unique costume you saw this Halloween season?

My friend dressed in a full-sized Scoobie Doo outfit. He is 21.

    6. What was your favorite costume as a child?

    Peter of Narnia. No shame...

    7. How do you feel about the over-decorating of houses for Halloween? Love it or hate it?

I hate the creepy scary stuff, but I love things like this: http://holidays.thefuntimesguide.com/files/halloween-pumpkin-flashers.jpg

    8. What's your favorite candy?

    Scotch

    9. Do you/did you/would you ever steal Halloween candy from your children? (Be Honest--I won't tell!)

    Yes/yes/yes

Similar to the "Occupy Wall St" movement in NYC, there is an Occupy DC demonstration that has been going on outside my building for weeks. Yesterday they were joined by a gay-rights activist group and several dozen cross-dressers, and they all sang together. Best people-watching experience. EVER.

    From Chris:

    1. On a scale of 1-10, (10=best year ever) how was your Halloween this year?

    hmm, I'd say a 7-8

    2. Did you (or your kids/grandkids) dress up this year? What were the costumes?

The kids did! Ansley was Cleopatra, Rylan was Batman (again), and Ava was Dorothy

    3. Did you go trick or treating with the kids or were you the candy-distributor?

We went with the kids :o)But we did leave a bowl of candy out on the porch!

    4. What kind of candy did you give out? How many bags of did you go through? Or did you blow off the holiday and keep your porch light turned off so the kids wouldn't bug you?

DumDum's, chocolate eyeballs, chocolate fangs, reeses peanut butter cups, snickers, etc. (5 bags total)

    5. Craziest/most unique costume you saw this Halloween season?

I don't think there was anything too crazy, but there was a guy dressed as a zombie in freedom sound, and he carried a chainsaw and walked like a zombie all over the place. He was alone and everyone wondered what he was doing, lol!
    6. What was your favorite costume as a child?

    7. How do you feel about the over-decorating of houses for Halloween? Love it or hate it?

I love it, as long as its not too too scary.

    8. What's your favorite candy?

    Reeses Peanut Butter cups

    9. Do you/did you/would you ever steal Halloween candy from your children? (Be Honest--I won't tell!)

    I do! haha!

    10. Anything else you want to share about Halloween, 2011? Did you start a new tradition? First time trick-or-treating with a new baby? First time your "tween" went out alone? Spill it!

No new traditions, but it was Ava's first time knocking on doors with the other two :o)

  4. 1. On a scale of 1-10, (10=best year ever) how was your Halloween this year?

7 - it was good, but I've had better.

    2. Did you (or your kids/grandkids) dress up this year? What were the costumes?

Of course! Garrett was a 1930's gangster, Spencer was a ninja, and Sarah was a witch. Their mother (me!) was also a witch!

    3. Did you go trick or treating with the kids or were you the candy-distributor?

I went trick-or-treating with them. We usually leave the candy in a couple of bowls on the front porch so that we can all go out together.

    4. What kind of candy did you give out? How many bags of did you go through? Or did you blow off the holiday and keep your porch light turned off so the kids wouldn't bug you?

I'm not sure how many bags there were. I buy some "good stuff" with chocolate and also some cheap stuff like dum dums and smarties. We then get these little baggies and put one "good" candy in with one "cheap candy." We put together 160 little baggies and only had one left over - our neighborhood is very popular to trick or treat in!

    5. Craziest/most unique costume you saw this Halloween season?

Nothing really stands out, although there was a cute little girl in a candy corn costume at a party we attended.

    6. What was your favorite costume as a child?

I remember that mom made me an Indian costume - I think I wore it for 5th and 6th grades. It was cool because it had fringe on the arms!

    7. How do you feel about the over-decorating of houses for Halloween? Love it or hate it?

Love it. We put up lots of stuff inside the house, as well as some stuff outside, too. And then there are the lighted decorations that I hang in a couple of windows. And the big spiderweb with human body parts I hang on the front porch. OK, maybe I do a lot outside, too!

    8. What's your favorite candy?

    Candy corn, Nestle's Crunch, caramels.

    9. Do you/did you/would you ever steal Halloween candy from your children? (Be Honest--I won't tell!)

Well, yeah! They're at school all day, and by the middle of November, I figure it's fair game!

    10. Anything else you want to share about Halloween, 2011? Did you start a new tradition? First time trick-or-treating with a new baby? First time your "tween" went out alone? Spill it!

We took two friends of the kids with us trick or treating. Also, we got a new puppy two weeks ago, and she came with us! However, she had to be carried about 2/3 of the time!

  5. 1. On a scale of 1-10, (10=best year ever) how was your Halloween this year?

10 for sure! Even though Isabel's first Halloween was last year, she was a baby and didn't care. This year she was enthralled by every second of it. That's made it awesome for us.

    2. Did you (or your kids/grandkids) dress up this year? What were the costumes?

    Isa was a pig :)

    3. Did you go trick or treating with the kids or were you the candy-distributor?

We left our bowl of candy out by the door and both went trick-or-treating with Isa.

    4. What kind of candy did you give out? How many bags of did you go through? Or did you blow off the holiday and keep your porch light turned off so the kids wouldn't bug you?

Well, I bought WAY too much candy. Even though we left our bowl out, there was still a lot left when we got home. It was all Laffy Taffy.

    5. Craziest/most unique costume you saw this Halloween season?

I didn't see any spectacular kids' costumes BUT my best friend and her husband dressed up as old people. Hilarious!

    6. What was your favorite costume as a child?

My mom hand made a Cinderella costume for me and that was my absolute fave. it looked exactly like the movie, choker with a pendant and all!

    7. How do you feel about the over-decorating of houses for Halloween? Love it
    or hate it?

I'm not a big decorator either, laura, but I do appreciate when people decorate the exterior of their houses. I don't like the scary houses - but the more pumpkins the better!

    8. What's your favorite candy?

m&m's - regular, original formula, plain m&m's. as far as I'm concerned, there is no candy that even competes with m&m's.

    9. Do you/did you/would you ever steal Halloween candy from your children? (Be Honest--I won't tell!)

Well, Isa is 19 months old so she can't eat it anyway - but yes, I'm eating some now! Ha!

    10. Anything else you want to share about Halloween, 2011? Did you start a new tradition? First time trick-or-treating with a new baby? First time your "tween" went out alone? Spill it!

We just had a blast taking Isabel for her first true Halloween b/c she loved every second of it. I was truly impressed with her attitude, best holiday we've had with her yet!

    We miss you guys!

  6. Yay! Thanks for sharing your Halloween experiences. Your trick or treaters must be very honest children. If we'd left the bowl out it would have been empty in 5 minutes!

Becca--your favorite candy is scotch? Haha...that cracked me up. Definitely know where that comes from!
Chris--I also hate those too scary costumes. We went to a unit halloween party on Saturday and some Marine thought it'd be fun to be a creepy monkey. Half the little kids refused to go inside the building because that dope was hanging out at the entrance.
Wendy--how cool that you dressed up too! Lots of the parents around here were dressed--Bill and I felt outnumbered. We're already thinking of next year's costumes!
Emi--your mom is always so good at sewing costumes. I think she made my award winning laundry bag costume as well! That's so cute that Isa enjoyed her Halloween. It's so fun when they finally "get" it. It's like a lightbulb goes off in their little heads..."You mean all I have to do is go to the door, say something (or even just stand there) and they just GIVE me the candy?" I love it!

Thanks again you guys! You're the best!

Several of you have mentioned that you're having trouble leaving comments. Try using one of the options if you have one (google account, wordpress, etc...) If not, click on "Name/URL" and type your name it. You don't need to fill in the URL part. I'm trying to get this little glitch fixed, but until then this should work.
